One Way DAF Holders Can Stick It to Trump

BY BETH HUANG, MVF DIRECTOR OF FOUNDATION RELATIONS

Three of the largest DAF providers have frozen grants to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Here's how we fight back.

One Way DAF Holders Can Stick It to Trump

Dear friends,

I’m writing to all of Movement Voter Fund’s donors with a DAF with an easy, concrete, and time-sensitive opportunity to help beat back authoritarianism and stand up to the Trump administration.

Here’s the context:

Last week, a group of DAF providers, including Fidelity Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, and Schwab DAFGiving360, froze all grants to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) after the Trump administration filed a politically motivated indictment against the organization. With nothing but an accusation, three of the largest DAF providers stopped processing donations to SPLC, cutting off the civil rights nonprofit from its donors.

This is just the latest attack from this federal government on institutions that don’t get in line with the Trump regime. This administration has threatened universities, law firms, companies, and even public servants.  By refusing to process donations to SPLC, these DAF providers are capitulating to the Trump administration, setting a precedent that puts every civil society organization at risk.

MVF is helping organize DAF holders to push back collectively to ensure that financial institutions don’t aid in the Trump administration’s attempts to silence dissent.

Two actions you can take:

  1. Join us on May 14 for a call among DAF holders to hear how you can join the campaign to pressure these DAF providers to resume donations to SPLC. We’ll share detailed support on how to take the most powerful action. You'll be in a room with peers who are asking the same questions you are.
  2. Fill out this three-minute survey. Along with several key allied organizations, we are mapping who holds DAFs, where, and what actions people are willing to take, so we can assess and organize our collective power. Your survey responses will be seen only by any organization you’ve marked as a place you’re affiliated with and a very small coordinating group across the organizations. This information will not be shared beyond that without your explicit permission. If you'd prefer not to share your information with this group directly, reach out to advisor@movementvoterfund.org. We can collect your response and share it anonymously with the organizers.

Together, we can stand up to authoritarianism and the Trump administration’s attacks on our rights. Thank you for your support!

In solidarity,

Beth Huang, MVF Director of Foundation Relations
